CANYONS SWIMMERS START '07 OFF WITH A SPLASH...
Canyons Aquatics swimmers did one of three things this weekend: 1) swim at the Q Meet/Grand Prix Qualifier. 2) swim at the PVST New Years Meet. 3) prepare for next week's Grand Prix meet. No matter where they were, Canyons swimmers made a big splash...
SENIOR SWIMMERS GRAB GRAND PRIX AND SECTIONAL TIMES AT BELMONT
Canyons sent a dozen swimmers south to the Long Beach Grand Prix Qualifier at the Belmont Aquatic Complex. This meet started slow for the Canyons kids but quickly turned to gold. Three Canyons swimmers picked up Grand Prix qualifying times and earned a trip back to Belmont next week to compete with some of the best in the country. Adriana Silva qualified in the 100 free and Jasmine Henderson and Maggie Hanson both pick up Gand Prix cuts in the in the 100 back. The meet saw several great performances including new sectional cuts for Sam Asencio who blazed through the 50 free in a 25.32. Distance swimmer Allison Morales dropped 17 seconds off her 1650 to get her second sectional time. Riley Mita earned his first sectional cut in the 1650 taking his best time down by more than 21 seconds. Sunday night finals saw nine Canyons swims and nine Canyons personal records.
Next week's meet will see not only Jasmine, Maggie and Adriana, but Konrad Antoniuk, Gilbert Casequin, Michael Chiu, Dan Colvin, Jordan Danny, Chelsea Griffiths, Nui Harris, Ryan Kristensen, KT Livingston, Adria Morales, Garrett Nugent and Sarah Pino, as well.
CANYONS SWIMMERS VENTURE TO VENTURA
Heading west, a large contingent of Canyons swimmers converged on the waters of Ventura Community College where Canyon swimmers found the warm coastal air just right for fast swimming. 44 swimmers saw new time standards achieved (see our RESULTS page). The meet saw one team record (see below) and numerous first place finishes. More important to the coaches, were the impressive results. Led by Morgan Thibault who racked up 7 new time standards and Austin Barreiro who notched 6 new time standards for himself, numerous personal records as well as new time standards were achieved.
MATTHEW JOHNSON BREAKS THE 9-10 500 FREESTYLE RECORD
In what was considered the most exciting race of the weekend, Matthew Johnson out-touched current team record holder in the 500 free, Cole Cogswell, by 4 one hundredths of a second, to win the 500 free and establish a new team record of 6:09.65. eclipsing the old record of 6:20.37, set by Cole a few weeks ago. Both boys surpassed the old record by more than 10 seconds. Not only are they the two top distance swimmers for Canyons at that age group, they're next door neighbors as well. Congratulations Matt.
TIME DROPS ARE THE NAME OF THE GAME
Morgan Thibault led all Canyons swimmers with a powerhouse performance that saw her drop time in 8 of 8 events. Austin Barreiro and Asia Antoniuk both established 7 personal records as Nicole Antoniuk, Jaryd Borja and Katie Huntington dropped in 6 events. Twelve more swimmers dropped time in at least five events. They were Michelle Ahlberg, Nicolette Barreiro, Ana Cornell, Shayne Hanpanit, Caitlyn Hecker, Ashlee Jaco, Mitch Johnson, Sasha Kumar, Melvin Martinez, Tanner Olson, Tamra Santoyo and Kian Taylor
