CANYONS TAKES 3RD AT WINTER CHAMPS

Dec 14, 2009

Swimmers from the Canyons Gold group up to the Senior Blue group attended the Winter Age Group Championships at Cerritos and went toe to toe with the best swim programs from Orange County and beyond.  Finishing 3rd in the men’s, women’s and overall categories, the meet was a huge success for Canyons with numerous personal records and two age group relay records broken.

Kyle Burke earned his way to next week’s sectional championships off his 15 & older silver medal 100 breast stroke time of 1:01.03 as did Emma Osowski who finished with twin golds taking the 13-14 1000 and 1650 and earning two sectional cuts.  Emma joins Canyons growing list of impact distance swimmers.  Augustina Hansen snuck under the 200IM sectional qualifying time as she finished 4th with a 2:13.49 earning her sectional time by .10

For the 10 & under girls, Cameron Helm burst on to the Championship circuit with one of the top overall performances at the meet.  Taking the gold in the 200 free, 100, fly 100 IM, 200IM, she settled for 4th in the 100 breast and 5th in the 50 free.

Alexa Skours-Neely earned four silvers (50 back, 100 back, 50 fly & 50 free) and swam 5th in the 100 fly and 4th in the 100 breast.

Alexa and Cameron were joined by Sophie Morici and Jennifer Wong to win the 200 yard freestyle relay and get silver in the 200-medley relay.

The 11-12 girls were a huge factor in Canyon success this weekend with breakout performances by several swimmers.   The Russian Rocket, Liza Kuznetsova took the 500 freestyle in a 5:20.35 and silver in the 200 free, 200IM, then bronze in the 100 back and 100 IM.

Malih Grim let all of Southern California know that Canyons has another star breaststroker rising as she took both the 50 breaststroke and the 100 breaststroke then took 4th in the 200IM.

Strong in all areas the 11-12 girls turned to Tamara Santoyo for freestyle and she came up with 4th in the 100 free, 6th in the 50 free, 2nd in the 500 free and 3rd in the 100 fly.

Ally Schultz swam to 9th in the 200 free and 5th in the 500 free while Courtney Skelly took 10th in the 200IM.

However, it was the relays that would be the brightest moments of the 11-12 year olds.  With 4 swimmers dominating their strokes, the quartet of Liza Kuznetsova, Maliah Grim, Mik Ranslem and Tamara Santoyo broke two team records in the 200 and 400 medley relays. Both record swims earned the girls gold medal finishes.  They then combined for silvers in the 200 free and 400 free relays.
