Dolphin Group
This half-hour group is designed to teach the basics of each stroke in the diving well, where swimmers can get highly personalized attention and frequent correction. The Dolphin group works on teaching the four basic strokes of competitive swimming (freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke). Classes are offered every half hour from 3:30 on and are offered two or three times a week. There is no age limit to the Dolphin group. Classes are small and personal with no more than 8 swimmers in a group. The Dolphin group is a hybrid of swim lessons and swim team. Athletes training in this group are encouraged to participate in our Blue and Gold meets (optional). New swimmers must be tested before they can enroll in this group. Swimmers graduating from our swim school will normally enroll in this program.
COACH: Amanda Ellery - COC
Super Dolphin Group
This half-hour group is designed for the Dolphin swimmer who has the basic techniques of all four strokes and is ready to begin working on gaining endurance and speed. Super Dolphins also learn racing starts and turns for each stroke. Super Dolphins are encouraged (but not required) to begin competing in selected swim meets. Super Dolphins train in the 25-yard-lane pool. Class size in this group tends to be around 20 swimmers.
COACH: Amanda Ellery - COC
Bronze Group
The Bronze group is for swimmers who are proficient in the four competitive strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. As a beginning competitive group, Bronze swimmers continue to develop starts and turns as well as perfect their technique, increase endurance, and learn the fundamentals of competitive swimming. Attendance at swim meets is encouraged but not required. The Bronze group is one of our most popular groups and is now offered in two locations.

Athletes move into this group from Bronze where the focus is mainly on learning four legal competitive strokes and taking their competitive technique to the next level. The sets run faster than in Bronze and the coaches have higher expectations. Swim meet attendance is still optional but required for advancement to the Gold group.

Gold Group
The Gold group is the final segue from lightly competitive swimming to highly competitive. Although the group continues to work on the basics, everything about the group is designed to encourage the swimmers to compete often and attempt to achieve Junior Olympic time cuts. This group trains 1.5 hours daily plus has an additional ½ hour of dryland exercise. Classes are offered 3 or 5 times a week. Swim meet attendance is encouraged and all swimmers in this group are enrolled in our coordinated meet entry system. The Gold group offers specific stroke instruction along with an introduction to some of the most modern training techniques available.

Varsity Team
This unique group is aimed at the high school age swimmer looking for training prior to, during, and after the high school season. This group is broken down by speed and strength but is open to all high school aged swimmers. Participation in your high school program is not a requirement. Practice sessions are 1.5 hours offered daily. Varsity swimmers are not part of the Coordinated Meet Entry system but are urged to compete in meets as a means to chart their progress. Varsity swimmers are also not part of the Family Commitment program. Dedicated Varsity swimmers can apply for promotion to Senior Development or Senior Blue. Canyons is proud to have coached swimmers from all six high schools in our Varsity group with great results. Our Varsity coaches will work with your high school coaches to help perfect your competitive strokes, starts and turns.
COACH: Sarah Colvin - SCAC
Junior Olympic Group
This is the first of our highly competitive swim groups. All athletes in this group have earned their way in by either achieving Junior Olympic cuts or showing extreme dedication and potential. Attendance is expected at 90% or better and swimmers who cannot make the sets or lack in attendance will be sent back to Gold. Swim meet attendance is mandatory and all swimmers in this group are enrolled in our coordinated meet entry system. Selection to the Junior Olympic Group is very competitive and limited.
COACH: Jeremy Anderson - COC
Senior Development Group
Admission to the Senior Development group is by consideration of both the JO coach and the Senior Development coach. This group’s workouts mirror those of the Junior Olympic group with a higher degree of intensity. Senior Development swimmers are required to attend frequent swim meets and are expected to show significant improvement over a year’s time. This is a transition group and the expectation of the coach is for the athletes in the group to earn Senior Blue consideration within 12 months. The group currently trains from 5 – 7 PM at Santa Clarita Pool. As with all competitive groups all swimmers in this group are enrolled in our coordinated meet entry system.
COACH: Vicky Donnelly – Santa Clarita Pool
Senior Blue Group
Entry to the senior blue group is based on past performance and a willingness to train with great intensity. Competition to enter the group is very high and 90% attendance is mandatory. Swimmers unable to keep up with the rigors of the group will be asked to work at a lower level until they are able to make the proper commitment. Expectations of swimmers in this group are to make sectional cuts and thereby qualify to apply to the Senior Gold group. As with the other “elite” groups, admission to this group is not based on times alone. Membership in Senior Blue does not guarantee a promotion to the Senor Gold group.
COACH: Mike Bechtholdt - SCAC
Senior Gold Group
This is the top level of training offered at Canyons. Swimmers in this group have at least a sectional cut and should be working on Junior National cuts. Training in this group is the most intense some swimmers will ever experience including double sessions holidays, summers and twice a week during the year. Swim sets are performed at an intense speed and all members of this group are expected to be in top shape.
COACH: Jeff Conwell – SCAC
