CANYONS STRONG AT AGE GROUP CHAMPS
Canyons Aquatics sent a very young team the Age Group Championships at Long Beach. The coaching staff chose to keep the Senior Gold swimmers out of the meet have them concentrate on the upcoming Senior Invitational at Commerce next week. Canyons coaches are extremely proud of our young squad as they finished 5th in the women's, mens and combined team scores. Considering that some of the other clubs came to the meet with all their top swimmers, Canyons top 5 finish shows our club's depth, the success of our Varsity team as well as the strength of our up-and-comers.
Leading the scoring for Canyons was Bryana Waage with 3 second place finishes, 2 third places and a 5th place. Matt Howard swam to a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th place finish. Mitchell Johnson dropped an impressive 19 seconds in the 500 free to place 11th as well as pick up his Spring JO cut.
Canyons coaches worked overtime watching each and every swim as well as video taping much of the excitement for future anaylsis. With a "no swimmer left behind" Coach Jay, Coach Mike and Coach Vicky watched 3 hours of miles swims Sunday night until the last bell rang. Canyons swimmers and parents thank our coaches for getting our young swimmers ready (many for the first time) for championship competition.
SASHA KUMAR...SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT
It seems every time Sasha Kumar hits water, another Canyons record falls. Three Canyons 8 and under records fell victim to Sasha as she broke her own 50 back record (36.35) and her own 100 Breast record (1:29.33). She swam the 50 Breast in 36.35 to break Jordan Danny's 37.83 set in 2000. Canyons coaches see great things ahead for Sasha who as recently moved up to the Coach Jay's Junior Olympic group. Sasha now owns almost half of the 8 & under short course team records and will be setting her sights on Canyons tough slate of 9 - 10 records when she ages up soon.
NEW TIME STANDARDS ACHIEVED
Jonathan Hwang led all swimmers picking up 5 new time standards as well as dropping time every time he hit the water. Riley Mita picked up 3 new time standards including an SCRT (Southern California Reportable Time) in the 400IM. SCSRT times were also earned by Hayley Good in the 50 free (just missing a sectional cut) and Matt Howard in the 500 free.
