2007 CENTRAL CALIFORNIA JUNIOR OLYMPICS HIGHLIGHTS

The Central California Junior Olympics ended with a splash as Canyons swimmers achieved 83% best times in prelims and finals combined. Overall there were 203 lifetime best swims over the 3 days which resulted in a 3rd place finsih for the blue and gold.

DAY ONE RESULTS

Several swimmers from the JO group are in Bakersfield this weekend competing at the Central California Junior Olympics. The Canyons crew is making a strong impact at the event placing numerous swimmers in the finals. The first day of the three day meet saw impressive results from all age groups. In the 500 free Megan Shultz who just recently moved into the 11 - 12 age group, swam two lifetime bests earning a trip to the championship finals where she finished 6th with a 5:45.97. Earning trips to the consolation finals were Asia Antoniuk (11th 5:54.41), Nicolette Barreiro (13th 6:01.75) and Tara Olson (14th 6:06.02).

For the boys, Mitch Johnson and Connor Mita made it back to championship finals with Mitch taking 5th (5:41.69) and Connor taking 7th (5:50.91).

Morgan Thibault made consol finals in the 400IM with a 5:07.63, finishing 12 on the day.

The 9-10 100 Back saw Mik Ranslem and Emma Osowski in championship finals with Mik taking 6th (1:17.64) and Emma taking 8th (1:19.04). Augustina Hansen won the consolation final with a 1:20.23 to take 9th.

For the 11-12 Girls, Asia Antoniuk, Nicolette Barreiro and Megan Schultz all earned their way back to consolation finals where Asia took 11th (1:12.24), Megan took 13th (1:13.02) and Nicolette took 15th (1:13.71).

For the boys the 100 back saw Austin Barrreiro earn his way to the championship finals in for the 9-10 age group, swimming to 6th place (1:16.04) while Derek Chang won the consolation finals with a 1:19.26.

11-12 Boys saw Chris Cogswell and Connor Mita earn trips to finals where Chris finished 7th with a 1:13.92 and Connor 8th with a 1:13.94. Matt Howard earned a consolation final, taking 15th and swimming a 1:03.97.

Canyons milers included Matthew Howard (10th), Jaryd Borja (13th) and Alex Johnson (15th).

The 9-10 100 free saw Mikayla ranslem finals taking 5th with a 1:08.03 followed closely by Augustina Hansen in 6th (1:08.75) and Emma Osowksi in 8th (1:08.75). For the 11-12 Girls, Nicolette Barreiro took 12th (1:01.91)

For the boys, Austin Barreiro finaled in 5th with a days best of 1:05.35 while Mitch Johnson finaled for the 11-12 boys finishing 7th with a 1:01.20. Connor Mita swam to 12th place with a 1:04.24.

Girls 9-10 200 Im saw Emma Osowski finish an impressive 4th with a day's best of 2:45.92. For the 11-12 girls, Nicole Antoniuk finished 10th with a 2:28.71.

DAY TWO RESULTS

Day one ended with 28 second swims and 13 championship finals (46 percent). Today Canyons took it up a notch with 33 second swims with 16 championship finals (48 percent). The relays opened the day with the 9-10 girls taking 2nd and 7th. The foursome of Mik Ranslem, Augustina Hansen, Maliah Grim and Emma Osowski swam for the silver and Liza Kuznetsova, Tamarra Santoyo, Allysa Schultz and Jenna Powell took 7th.

The 9-10 boys took home the gold behind strong swims from Austin Barreiro, Sean Tucker, Derek Chang and Cole Cogswell.

11-12 girls finished 3rd with Nicolette Barreiro, Nicole Antoniuk, Megan Schultz and Stephanie Poleman doing the legework. The 11-12 boys were victorious taking gold off strong swims from Mitch Johnson, Chris Cogswell, David Van Name and Connor Mita. Rounding out the relay success were the 13-14 boys with Charles Norris, Jayred Borja, Alex Johnson and Matt Howard.

The individual events opened with the 50 fly. 9-10 Girls were led Mik Ranslem taking 4th in finales (33.73) and Emma Osowski taking 7th (35.57). Cole Cogswell swam to a silver dropping 5 seconds of his seed time to register a 32.40. Austin Barreiro finished 10th with a 3 second drop from prelims to finals.

11-12 girls were led by Stephanie Poleman in 9th with a 31.33 and Nicole Antoniuk finishing 11th with a 31.43.

Canyons showed our distance strengght in the 1000 Free as Jaryd Borja took 7th Matt Howard 12th, and Alex Johnson 15th.

The 100 breast saw nine year old Liza Kuzntesova finish 8th with a 1:30.77 lifetime best at prelims. Jenna Powell earned an SCS summer JO time with her 1:32.91 (12th place) and Maliah Grim took 13th with a 1:34.15. Sean Tucker finished in 13th for 9-10 boys with a lifetime best of 1:37.12 in prelims.

Nicole Antoniuk dropped 6 seconds on the day to final in 5th place with a 1:13.61 earning the 11 year old a "Q" time. Connor Mita picked up an SCS SCJO cut with his 1:19.04 5th place swim.

Mik Ranslem continued to impress as she hit identical 36.36s in her prelim and finals to finish 7th in the 9-10 50 back. Augustina Hanse finished 8th in a 37.56 and Maliah Grim took 9th. Liza Kuznetsova rounded out the 9-10 scoring wtih an 11th place swim. For the boys, Cole Cogswell was 5th (35.54) and Derek Chang took a page from Mik Ranslem's book and did double 36.40's. Canyons swimmers are nothing if not constant. Austin Barreiro rounded out the 9-10 boys with a 10th place swim in 36.45.

11-12 girls were led by Asia Antoniuk swimming to 9th in a 32.62 and the boys saw Mitch Johnson finish 9th in a 33.39. Matt Howard swam to a 2:16.06 13th place finish in the 200 back.

The final individual event for Saturday was the 200 free with the 9-10 girls demanding respect. Liza Kuznetsova took 4th 2:28.13, Mik Ranslem 6th 2:28.09, Augustina Hansen 7th, 2:29.63, X Powell 15th, 2:37.51.

11-12 girls saw Stephanie Poleman get the bronze in a 2:09.54, Asia Antoniuk 8th 2:13.43 and Megan Schultz 7th, 2:14.19. For the boys, Alex Johnson swam to 5th (2:11.93) and Connor Mita took 11th 2:13.64.

The evening wrapped up with the 400 medley relay and a bronze for the 11-12 girls with Stephanie Poleman, Nicole Antoniuk, Asia Antoniuk and Nicolette Barreiro doing the the work. The boys took it up a notch and grabbed gold behind the strokes of Chris Cogswell, Connor Mita, David Van Name and Mitch Johnson. The 13-14 boys finished 5th from strong swims by Charles Norris, Alex Johnson, Matt Howard and Jaryd Borja.

Canyons is currently in 3rd for overall team scoring behind Clovis and host Bakersfield. SCS clubs Including Santa Barbara and Santa Maria are close behind.

DAY THREE RESULTS

The third and final day got started with the 200 Medley Relay. Leading off were the 9-10 girls comprised of Liza Kuzntesova, Augustina Hansen, Mik Ranslem and Emma Osowski, who combined to take silver. The foursome of Maliah Grim, Cameron Helm, Jenna Powell and Tamrra Santoyo took 5th. For the 10 and under boys, Derek Change, Jerimiah Lee, Cole Cogswell and Austin Barreiro combined to take the gold.

11-12 Boys on the strokes of Chris Cogswell, Connor Mita, Mitch Johnson and David Van Name turned in another gold medal performance with the 11-12 girls getting silver from the sisters Antoniuk, Stephanie Poleman and Nicolette Barreiro. The 13-14 boys took 6th behind Matt Howard, Alex Johnson, Charles Norris and Jaryd Borja.

8 and under 100 IM saw Tanner Olson finish 3rd and Shayne Hanpanit 9th. 10 & Under boys had Cole Cogswell take 5th and Jerimiah Lee 7th while on the girls' side Liza Kuznetsova took 7th, Emma Osowski 9th Mailah Grilm 12th and Augustina Hansen 15th. 11-12 girls Nicole antoniuk and Stephanie Poleman and Nicole Antoniuk took 9th and 11th respectively and Connor Mita represented the boys with an 11th place finish.

The 11-12 girls 100 fly saw Stephanie Poleman finished 10thand Asia Antoniuk take 14th. Mitch Johnson took 5th for the 11-12 boys and Matt Howard 14th for the 13-14 boys.

Tanner Olson was victorios in the The 8 and under 50 breast with a gold medal performance followed by Shayne Hanpanit in 9th and Cameron Helm in 12th. 10 and under boys saw Jeremiah Lee finish 6th, Derek Chang take and Sean Tucker 14th. Connor Mita grabbed 5th place for the 11-12 boys. For the girls, Mikayla Ranslem took 6th, Liza Kuznestova 9th, Emma Osowski 11th and Maliah Grim 12th.

Tanner Olson stoked to 6th place in the 8 and Under 50 free with Shayne Hanpanit in 9th. Cole Cogswell 3rd grabbed the bronze medal and Austin Barreiro took 7th. 11-12 boys saw Chris Cogswell finish 13th and Mitch Johnson take 9th.

For the girls 50 free, the 10 and unders were led by Emma Osowski in 4th, Augustina Hansen in 7th, Mikayla Ranslem in 8th 3 and Maliah Grim 16th. The 11-12 girls had strong swims from Stephanie Poleman (7th) and Nicolette Barreiro (10th)

The meet wrapped up with the 400 free repay where the 11-12 boys (Cogswell, Van Name, Mita, Johnson) took silver and the 11- 12 girls (Poleman, Schultz, Antoniuk A, Barreiro) took bronze. The 13-14 boys team of Norris, Johnson, Howard, Borja took 5th.

In the end, Canyons placed 3rd overall in team scoring ,8 points ahead of Santa Barbara Swim Club.
