CANYONS SWIMMERS LEAD THEIR HIGH SCHOOLS AT CHAMPIONSHIPS
Canyons swimmers have long dominated the Foothill League Championships and this years' event was no exception. With CAC swimmers on all 6 teams in the league, there wasn't a final to be seen that didn't feature one of our own.
Six CAC swimmer earned 9 league championships including 4 individual Foothill League records. Led by KT Livingstone, Chelsea Griffiths, Jordan Danny, Ryan Kristensen, Garrett Nugent, and Konrad Antoniuk, the group represented Canyon High, Hart High, Saugus High and Valencia High. All individual league records broken at the meet came from Canyons Aquatic swimmers.
The trio of Livingstone, Danny and Griffiths made league history by each breaking their own league records in their respective events. KT (freshman/Canyon) eclipsed her league record of 58.97 (set on Tuesday night) with a 57.81 earning her an automatic CIF qualifying time and coming within tenths of Jennifer Parmenter's club record.
Jordan broke her own league record (also set on Tuesday) with a 1:04.25 victory. A personal best, she also broke her own Canyons Aquatic Club record. Jordan then went on to capture gold in the 200IM with a 2:06.92 breaking another Foothill league and club record. The CAC record of 2:07.50 was set by Lizette Patterson in 2000.
Chelsea took out her league record in the 100 back with a 58.62. Chelsea led a Canyons Aquatic sweep of the event with Maggie Hanson (Hart) in second, Jasmine Henderson (Valencia) in third and Alvina Wong (West Ranch) in 4th.
Garrett Nugent captured gold in the 200 free with a strong 1:43.51 and then things got fast as Garrett set a new Foothill record with a CIF Automatic qualifying time of 51.33. In the 100 fly. Garrett was followed by three more Canyons Aquatics swimmers, Brent Stevenson (Hart) swam a 54.59, also an automatic qualifying time followed by Peter Szymanski (Golden Valley) and Drew Frerichs (Valencia) with consideration times.
Canyons distance kid, and Hart swimmer, Konrad Antoniuk showed his endurance easily winning the 500 free in a 4:49.57 earning another automatic CIF time. Konrad was the only male freshman to win a league title. On the girls side, Chrysta Mcmahon was 4th the 500 free for Canyon.
Ryan Kristensen showed his speed taking both the 50 and 100 free. Ryan's 100 free victory (47.57) led another Canyons Aquatic sweep as Nui Harris (Canyon) finished second and Gilbert Casequin (West Ranch) took third. Both Nui and Ryan earned automatic CIF qualifying times. Andrew Skvrna took 2nd in the 50 free.
Maggie Hanson, the youngest swimmer in her final, took second in the 200 free earning herself another Automatic CIF time.
The 100 back featured two Canyons Aquatics swimmers in the medals led by KC Linn and Nui Harris. Andrew Skvarana and Gilbert Casequin joined the duo with 4 CAC kids coming away with automatic times.
The girl's 50 free saw Chelsea take second and Rachael Stoffel 5th. Rachael (only a Sophomore) took 3rd in the 100 free with Michelle finishing 6th. Maggie Hanson, the youngest swimmer (frosh) in her final, took second in the 200 free earning herself another Automatic CIF time
Other swimmers showing their stuff included Alvina Wong (West Ranch) 5th in the 100 fly and Megan Spoon (Valencia) with a 6th in the same event.
TUESDAY PRELIMINARY DAY
K T Livingstone and Jordan Danny did it again...they broke another record, only this time, it wasn't a team record, but a Foothill League record. For KT it was the 100 fly record held at 59.17 since 1984 that she eclipsed with a 58.97 (KT's best is actually a 57.56). Only a freshman at Canyons High, that record better be written in pencil as she will probably break it again and again. Jordan Danny, swimming for Hart, took out the league record with a 1:04.92 in the 100 Breast. The Foothill record holder in that event (1:06.85 in 2006) Jordan is making sure no one ever breaks a breaststroke record in this league again. She too has gone faster with a 1:04.59 personal record in this event. Both girls and several other Canyons swimmers from our Sr. Gold, Sr. Blue, Varsity and Sr. Development teams will be back in the pool tonight at the Foothill Finals. Canyons swimmers continue to dominate Foothill swim meets thanks to their tenacious training and competitive spirit.
