CANYONS TAKES SECOND AT SHORT COURSE JUNIOR OLYMPICS
Canyons finished the 2008 Junior Olympics Championship meet second only to Orange County powerhouse Irvine Novaquatics in a 7 day competition that took two weeks to complete. Numerous gold, silver and bronze medals were earned as well as team records broken. Fifty-seven Canyons swimmers ages 8-17 participated in the effort which was fraught with illness and last minute roster changes. A total of 7 team records were set. The first weekend saw Canyons 12 & under squad put the team in 3rd place. Canyons older swimmers (13-18) hit the water and surpassed the competition winning the second weekend and taking the team to a best ever Short Course JO finish of second place (equaling Canyon's 2004 effort).

Canyons swimmers have broken 20 team records since the season began in September.
OLDER JO MEET REPORT
Bob Hwang tossed another gold medal on the pile taking the 13-14 200 fly in a 1:51.67 while KT Livingstone flew her way to a bronze medal with a 2:03.39 just a few one hundredths off her team record pace. 13-14 girls saw Kirsten Justice turn in a 9th place finish. Ashkaun Hami, swimming sick, still managed a great fly taking 10th in the 15-18 age group with a 1:57.86 swim.
Jordan Danny took the opportunity to drop her 200 breaststroke a bit on a silver medal swim with a team record 2:16.83 breaking her own team record set last spring. Sarah Pino was in fine form taking 13th in the event. For the boys, Nick Korth continued to shed seconds like unwanted weight. Swimming to a 10th place finish, Nick turned in a 2:11.23.
Riley Mita broke his string of 5 individual 4th place finishes by earning a 2nd place finish in the 13-14 1650 free with a team record swim of 16:27.88 breaking his own team record of 16:33.45. Riley was just one of four 13-14 boys scoring points in the top 16 of the event with Mitchell Johnson recording his second big time drop of the meet to take 10th with a 17:08.88, followed by Steven Haw in 17:22.77 and Kevin Martinez in 17.28.33.
Konrad Antonkiuk was in fine form as he stroked to a bronze medal finish with a 16:08.27 in the 15-18 division.
Bob Hwang found he had a little extra gas in the tank churning out his lifetime best in the 100 free with a 46.93 gold medal (first time under 47) victory and once again rewriting the team record books breaking his own record set earlier this year. Steven Haw lowered his best to 51.15 claiming 14th place honors. Nui Harris found himself in the 15-18 consolation finals taking 12th. For the 15-16 girls, Hayley Good earned a trip to the consolation finals taking 15th with a 54.03 while Sam Asencio earned a 16th place finish in the 13-14 division.
The combo of Chelsea Griffiths, Jordan Danny, KT Livingstone and Hayley Good turned on the magic one last time to take a second gold in and event that has become a Canyons specialty, the 400 medley relay.
For the 15 & older boys, an impressive swim was posted by Danny Colvin, Nolan Koon, Nui Harris and Ashkaun Hami taking the silver medal. The effort was made more impressive by the fact that both Hami and Colvin were suffering from illness but chose to step up and represent. The 13-14 boys squad of Riley Mita, Jonathan Hwang, Bob Hwang and Steven Haw earned themselves another silver as well. For the 13-14 ladies, Nicolette Barrieiro stepped in at the last minute to help Sam Asencio, Kirsten Justice and Nicole Antoniuk finish 8th.
The 200 freestyle relay of Nui Harris, Nolan Koon, Andrew Skvarna and Danny Colvin captured silver behind the Redlands quartet that set the 17-18 national record in the event. The 13-14 boys squad of Riley Mita, Stephen Haw, Kevin Martinez and Bob Hwang turned in a 1:31.64 swim that came up just shy of the gold. The 15-18 girls went head to head with some of the best sprinters in Southern California earning a 7th place finish. Hayley good, Adriana Silva, Chelsea Griffiths and KT Llvingstone combined in the effort. The 13-14 girls swimming with two alternates (due to illness) still turned in a strong effort taking 8th place.
The 100 backstroke was a scoring bonanza for Canyons with Chelsea Griffiths earning herself a gold medal in a personal record time of 56.29. Teammate KT Livingstone took 5th with a 57.87 and Maggie Hanson swam to a 14th place finish.
The 15 & older boys were led by Nui Harris's bronze medal swim in the 100 back with an impressive 52.68 finals time. In the 13-14 age group Riley Mita earn his 4th 4th place medal with a 55.31 finish in the championship final with Steven Haw earning a consolation final finish of 15th place.
The 13-14 200 free saw Sam Asencio finish 8th in the championship finals and Allison Morales take 14th. Jordan Danny showed that she has other tricks up her sleeve taking 6th in the 15 & older age group with a 1:54.50. For the boys, Nolan Koon won the consolation heat with a 1:43.66 with Nui harris taking 14th overall off a 1:46.44 swim.
The 13-14 100 fly gold went to Bob Hwang who plowed through the water to an impressive 50.95 time (amazingly, not his best). Ashkaun Hami took 7th in the championship final of the 15-18 100 fly (52.89) and Nolan Koon did just as he did in the 200 free, winning the consolation finals in fine form with a 51.60.
For the ladies, Kirsten Justice flew through the water for a 7th place finish (59.71) with Sam Asencio taking 12th (1:00.57). The 15-18 girls were led by KT Livingstone swimming a 56.91 for a 5th place finish.
In the 13-14 400 IM Bob Hwang took home another gold with a 4:05.14 effort. Riley Mita took 4th with a 4:16.32. In the 15-18 division Konrad Antoniuk took 12th place with a 4:12.28 swim. On the girls' side Jordan Danny finished 5th in the 400IM and broke another team record in the process. Jordan took out Lizette Patterson's 2003 record of 4:32.50 with her 4:30.19 swim. Maggie Hanson swam to a personal best 4:33.54 (also giving the team record a run) to finish 10th.
Canyons relay gold rush was led by the quartet of Chelsea Griffiths, Jordan Danny, KT Livingstone, and Hayley Good who combined to win the 15-18 200 medley relay. The 15-18 boys earned silver with the combination of Nui, Nolan, Ashkaun and Daniel Colvin while the 15-18 "B" team of Konrad Antoniuk, Nick Korth, Brent Stevenson and Andrew Skvarna (all Hart High teammates) combined for an 8th place finish. The 13-14 boys earned a matching silver with efforts by Riley Mita, Jonathan Hwang, Bob Hwang and Steven Haw. The 13-14 girls finished 5th with strong efforts by Allison Morales, Nicole Antoniuk, Kirsten Justice and Sam Asencio.
The 400 free relay was led by the Canyons 13-14 boys, with the combination of Riley Mita, Stephen Haw, Kevin Martinez and Bob Hwang, as they edged out Swim Pasadena for the win. The 15-18 boys took second in their race with Nolan Koon, Andrew Skvarna, Nui Harris and Danny Colvin doing the work. The 13-14 girls' squad of Sam Asencio, Kirsten Justice, Nicolette Barreiro and Allison Morales earned a 5th place finish and the 15-18 swam to a 6th place with efforts by KT Livingstone, Chelsea Griffiths, Hayley Good and Adriana Silva.
Thursday night highlights included Bob Hwang and Riley Mita going 3 & 4 in the 13-14 1000 free and Mitchell Johnson scoring points with his 14th place finish (and huge time drop). For the 13-14 girls, Allison Morales scored with an 8th place finish and KT Livingstone broke her team 1000 record yet again, taking 7th with a 10:26.11, knocking six more seconds off her best. The 15 & Older boys saw Konrad Antoniuk finish 5th.
Friday action began with the 13-14 boys 200 IM where SCS record holder Bob Hwang made easy work of the competition winning by a four second margin in a 1:53.98. The 15 & older boys saw Nolan Koon take the silver with a 1:53.48. The 15 & older girls earned points off KT Livingstone's 10th place finish (2:08.80).
The 13-14 500 free saw Riley Mita pick up another 4th place finish in a team record 4:43.25 breaking Bob Hwang's 2007 record of 4:45.54. Steven Haw earned 14th place. The girls race saw Adria Morales step aside due to illness but her sister Allison got the job done swimming a personal best and picking up a bronze medal with a strong 5:05.85 effort. Sam Asencio earned a 12th place finish.
The girls 15 & older 100 Breaststroke had Sarah Pino taking 16th place for the ladies while Nolan Koon suffered a swim cap malfunction during his race and finished 8th. Nick Korth, Canyons emerging breaststroke star took 10th (2nd in consols) after barely missing the championship final with an preliminary swim of 59.53.
The 13-14 200 Backstroke saw more Canyons points with Riley Mita picking up his 3rd 4th place medal in the 13-14 event. Nui Harris stroked to 5th place in the 15 & older back. For the ladies, Chelsea Griffiths look strong taking the silver in a 2:02.26 with KT Livingstone close behind for a 4th place medal (2:05.53).
The 50 free saw Nolan Koon take 7th in his third race of the evening. Danny Colvin and Andrew Skvarna went 1-2 in the consolation final. For the 13-14 ladies, Sam Asencio finished 12th.
The relays saw Canyons gold as the 4 x 200 quartet of Riley Mita, Steven Haw, Kevin Martinez and Bob Hwang came from behind to win the long swim with a 7:17.89 which ranks the foursome as #1 in the nation. the 13-14 girls swimming with Allison Morales, Nicolette Barreiro, Kirsten Justice and Sam Asencio earned a 5th place finish with an 8:07.30 time.
The 15-18 girls swam to bronze behind KT Livingstone, Adriana Silva, Jordan Danny and Chelsea Griffith's teamwork. The girls swam to a 7:43.41. The 15 & older Canyons boys matched the girls with a bronze of their own off swims by Nolan Koon, Danny Colvin, Konrad Antoniuk and Nui Harris. Their time was 7:07.19.

YOUNGER JO MEET REPORT
Nina Morrison took her third gold in the 100 free clocking a 54.37 and helping Canyons keep a hold of third place in the SCS Championship meet. With the first half of the Junior Olympics complete, Canyons 12 & under swimmers did their job to keep Canyons in the running for the team title. The 13 & older swimmers hit the water on Thursday evening with the 1000 free and the three full days of competition and a chance to pass Mission Viejo and NOVA to claim the Championship.
In addition to Nina's swim, Rebekah Haw wrapped up a strong meet with a 10th place finish in the 100 free while Asia Antoniuk took 14th in the 100 fly. Megan Schultz, Bryana Waage, Haw and Morrison just missed the gold in the 400 medly relay. Later, Schultz, Tara Olson, Taylor Poliseno and Morrison finished 8th in the 200 medley relay.
The 10 & under girls saw Mik Ranslem take 6th in the 100 free with Tamra Santoyo and Liza Kuznetsova going 1 & 2 in the consolation final. Mik then swam in her 6th final taking to take 8th in the 100 fly. Maliah Grim swam to 10th place in the 100 breast. Grim, Santoyo, Ranslem and Kuznetsova combined to take bronze in the 200 medley relay.
For the boys the 100 free saw Cole Cogswell pick up a bronze medal with Austin Barreiro close behind in 7th. Both boys moved up a notch from their morning swim. Austin and Cole then swapped the order with Austin winning the consolation final of the 100 fly and Cole taking 2nd (9th and 10th overall).
Canyons surprise swimmer of the meet, Alberto Armeinta, earned his way to another final taking 5th in the 11-12 100 free.
After two days of competition, Canyons is in 3rd place behind Irvine Novaqatics and the Mission Viejo Nadadores thanks in no small part to NIna Morrison who continued her winning ways taking the 200 free with a blistering 1:56.90 to blow away the nearest competitor by almost three seconds. Nina then swam to 6th in the 200IM. Rebekah Haw took 11th overall (3rd in the consols) 11-12 girls 200 free relay of Bryanna Waage, Megan Schultz, Haw and Morrison took 2nd and then Haw, Tara Olson, Asia Antoniuk and Morrison combined for 3rd in the 400 medley.
The 10 & under girls saw Liza Kuznetsova finish 7th in finals with Tamra Santoyo taking 11th while Mik Ranslem took 5th in the 50 fly with a 31.32.
Maliah Grim finished 15th. Mik returned to take 6th in the 200 IM with Kuznetsova taking 8th. the 200 medley relay of Grim, Kuznetsova, Santoyo and Ranselem swam to bronze.
For the boys Cole Cogswell picked up a bronze in the 3rd in the 200 free with Austin Barreiro taking 8th. Austin came back strong to take 4th in the 50 fly while Cole turned in a 5th place effort in the 200IM. Tanner Olson, Melvin Martinez, Austin Barrerio and COle Cogwsell combined to finish 5th in the 20 free relay.
11-12 boys, Alberto Armienta, Phillip Wog, David Van Name and Matt Johnson took 6th in the 200 free relay while the 6th. Alberto Armienta took 4th place in the 200 free.
Nina Morrison won the girls 11-12 500 free at the Short Course Junior Olympics. Finishing 3rd in her preliminary swim, Nina came back to win the event in finals knocking ten seconds off her best to finish with a 5:11.27 victory. Nina picked up her 3rd sectional time in the race. Nina then took bronze in the 50 free with a 25.47.
Rebekah Haw won the consolation final of the 500 while Megan Schultz took 12th (4th in the consol final) in the same event. Rebekah then took 10th in the 50 free withe 26.45.
The 10 & under 100 IM saw Mik Ranslem take 4th place in a 1:10.95 while Maliah Grim finished 4th in the consol finals (12th overall) with a 1:13.98. Maiah then took 8th in the 50 breast. Mik came back to take 10th in the 50 free while Tamara Santoyo earned her way to the championship final to take 8th.
Liza Kuznetsova took 11th in the 100 back for the 10& unders while Rebekah Haw took 9th for the 11-12s with Megan Schultz taking 15th.
For the boys, Matt Johnson won the consolation final of the 500 free with a 5:24.88 swim dropping a total of 11 seconds on the day. Newcomer Alberto Armienta took 11th in the 50 free and the won the 100 back consolation final with a 1:05.29.
The duo of Cole Cogswell and Austin Barreiro swam 4-5 in both the 100 back and the 50 free with Cole clocking a 1:09.09 in the back and a 27.54 in the free with Austin going 1:09.81 and 28.03.
