2007 SPRING JUNIOR OLYMPICS HIGHLIGHTS
Canyons Aquatic Club came away from the Spring 2007 Junior Olympics with several strong showings by Canyons swimmers including 5 broken team records, several new sectional cuts and one more swimmer qualified to attend the National Championships in New York later this month. With more than half the team attending their first ever Junior Olympics, this young group of athletes gained experience for a future of great accomplishments.
Day one of the Southern California Short Course Junior Olympics opened with the 1000 (13-14) and 500 (11-12) yard swims. Allison Morales and Sam Asencio plowed ten football fields of water with great results. Allison dropped 15 seconds to take 7th place and Sam dropped 25 seconds to finish 12th. Both swimmers picked up a new sectional cut. Adria Morales rounded out the scoring with a 15th place finish. For the boys, Riley Mita finished in 9th place.
Day two of the meet, the first full day of events at the Spring Junior Olympics saw another day of great races as Bob Hwang (14) led the team with a gold and silver medal as well as two impressive team records. The first record to fall was the 200IM record set by Ryan Parmenter in 1996. Parmenter's time of 1:58.94 was no problem for Bob as he plowed through the water to finish in a 1:56.91, more than two seconds faster than the record. Perhaps more impressive was Bob's work on the team 50 free record held by Olympic Champion in this event, Anthony Ervin. Bob's time of 22.12 bettered Anthony's 22.34, set in 1996, by 2 tenths of a second as he took took the gold handily.
KT Livingstone started with a strong AM swim in the 200 IM which earned her a trip to consolation finals where she knocked her time down to an impressive 2:10.65 good enough for second in the consols and 10th overall. KT's best work for the day came in the 200 back where she earned a return trip in the finals and came away with a bronze medal and a great time drop (2:06.98). Teammate Adria Morales came away with a 12th place finish and a time drop (2:11.48).
Rising star Nina Morrison swam to a 5:23.95 to take 5th place in the 11-12 500 free. Not content with a great distance swim, Nina came back to win the consolation heat of the 50 free and lower her sprint time to 26.59.
Riley Mita finaled in both the 500 free and the 200 back. In the 500, Riley dropped time in both prelims and finals bringing his 500 down to a 4:52.41 and a 7th place finish. For the 200 back Riley's prelim saw a 3 second drop to a 2:02.38. In the final Riley touched just off his best to pick up 7th place.
Sam Asencio, enjoying a great meet found herself tied for 8/9 after the preliminary of the 13-14 50 free. Narrowly getting out touched a swim-off, she came back with a vengeance in the evening consolation final to win her heat and lower her best to a 25.04.
Allison Morales set a personal record in her qualifying swim of the 13-14 500 free with a strong 5:13.76. The effort earned her a trip to the consolation finals where the powerful twin finished 15th. Rebekah Haw earned her way back to the evening consolation final in the 11-12 500 free, finishing 16th.
Day three was led by KT Livingstone swimming three grueling swims in the AM resulting in 3 trips to the finals. KT's first event, the 200 free saw her drop her personal record down to a 1:55.18 to take 5th. Returning just a few minutes later KT dropped her 100 backstroke down to 59.11 to take the silver medal. After a very brief rest, KT was back on the blocks in the 100 fly where she swam her third PR of the evening to take the bronze medal in a time of 57.72. just a few tenths off Jennifer Parmenter's team record.
Bob Hwang had his work cut out for him in two tough events. In the 200 free, Bob swam to the silver medal setting a personal record of 1:45.42. He later took 3rd in the 400IM.
Riley Mita (13) came into the day ranked 14th in the 13-14 100 back and walked out in 4th place dropping three seconds on the day to notch a 56.92. Riley then returned a short while later to pick up his 4th sectional time in three meets with a 4:19.36 for the 400IM to take 6th place for the evening.
Cole Cogswell (9) and Austin Barreiro earned their first ever return swims in the 9-10 200 free with Cole finishing 14th and Austin 16th.
Nina Morrison (12) enjoying a great meet, earned her way to the consolation finals in the 200 free coming up second in the heat, 10th overall with 2:03.70 dropping more than 6 seconds on the day. Rebekah Haw swam to 15th.
Tessa Chiu plowed through the 13-14 100 back to finish 14th overall and notch a new personal record of 1:02.13. Adria Morales finished just a stroke behind Tessa in 15th place.
The 4th and final day of individual events at the Junior Olympics saw some of the best swims of the meet from Canyons swimmers including team records by Riley Mita, Allison Morales and Bob Hwang, a National Championship qualifying time from KT Livingstone and two gold medals and a bronze.
Riley Mita (13-14) swam a 16:33.22 knocking more than 22 seconds off his previous best to break Konrad Antoniuk's record set in fall of '06 of 16:38.70. Riley finished 5th in the event.
Not to be outdone, Allison Morales took out Hanna Kim's team record in the girls 13-14 1650 (17:47.28 set in 2001) with a strong 17:45.61 dropping 11 seconds from her seed time to finish in 7th and establish herself as the top 13 year old at this distance. Allison then came back a few minutes later to swim in the consolation finals of the 200 fly.
KT Livingstone reached one milestone and almost a second as she blasted through her 200 fly to grab the bronze medal in a blazing time of 2:03.86. The time qualified KT for the National Championships at the end of the month. In addition she came within .15 of breaking Jennifer Parmenter's 1996 team record. No doubt KT will take another shot at that record at the championships.
Bob Hwang showed by he's the most feared flyer and sprinter in the country with a team record run in the 200 fly. Bob's time of 1:55.57 was a full second better than his previous team record of 1:56.57 set earlier this year. Bob then won the 100 free with a 47.88, just .06 off Anthony Ervin's team record.
Adria Morales turned in a great performance in the championship final of the 200 fly with a 2:09.95, knocking almost 3 seconds off her preliminary swim and picking up a 7th place medal.
Sam Asencio and Hayley Good showed their sprint speed in the 100 free with Sam coming home with a smoking fast 53.63 for 10th place and Hayley a 54.21 for 12th place. Hayleys' time earned her a sectional cut and a trip to Clovis this summer.
