CANYONS WINS SUMMER 2006 JUNIOR OLYMPICS

For the first time the club's 28 year existence, Canyons Aquatic Club has captured the Combined Team championship, the Girls Championship and the Boys Championship. Canyons aggressive swimming and depth (Canyons put over 80 swimmers in the water) gave the blue and gold a combined team score lead after day one that never faltered.

Coach Jeff Conwell expressed his gratitude to all his swimmers at the post meet celebration (see other story). Jeff acknowledged the Board Of Directors for going after the meet, the Meet Directors for running an event second to none, his coaches for their dedication and most of all his swimmers who have made untold sacrifices to train hard and swim fast.

TEAM RECORDS FALL

The meet was punctuated by several team records and a Southern California record in the 13 - 14 boys 200 freestyle relay. The team of Nui Harris, Konrad Antoniuk, Chris Weber and Bob Hwang broke Mission Viejo's long-standing (1981) record of 1:44.74 with a blazing 1:44.54.

Bob also broke Tyler Clark's 1999 record of 2:14.62 in the 200 fly with an impressive 2:13.93 as well as his own 100 fly and 200 IM records.

Rachael Krager showed her distance skills in the 800 free as she swam a 9:32.54 to take down Hanna Kim's 2002 record of 9:38.84 a few days later she did it again setting the team 1500 record with an 18.19.42. Rachael has set 3 team records this year.

DAILY DETAILS

Canyons Aquatic jumped out to an early lead after day one of the five day Southern California Swimming Junior Olympics. Behind great swims including several lifetime bests, Canyons finished the day with a lead in all three categories. On the boys' side, Canyons currently leads with 319 points, more than 100 over second place FAST. For the ladies, their 232 also places them in with a comfortable lead and gives Canyons an overall first day score of 551, almost 200 points over FAST.

Day two was another great day at the Junior Olympics with huge swims from John Pedrini who won the 15 & up 100 breaststroke with a sub 1:08 earning him a Junior National cut and a trip to the Jr. Nationals next week. Other event winners included Chris Weber taking the 13 - 14 100 breast, Allison Morales winning the 200 free. Monday night's Nui Harris earned his first Sectional cut in the 100 free.

The race for the championship tightened abut as the girls lead over Nellie Gale has been reduced to 1 point. For the boys Canyons holds a 40 point lead over FAST. The combined team score stands at 917 with a 237 point lead over FAST.

Day #3 saw Canyons hold on to our lead behind strong swims. With most of the team setting personal records, Canyons continues to pile up the points. Friday's swims saw victories from Stephen Haw in the 400 free, Bob Hwang in the 100 fly and the 200 IM.

Allison Morales picked up her first Sectional cut in the 400 free.

Canyons depth was the ticket today as we put numerous Canyons's swimmers on the blocks for several finals.

Canyons Aquatic fought their hardest battle on day four and while the club still led the overall rankings, the girls team has fell into second place behind the Nellie Gale Gators by a score of 876 to 898. The boys remained on top as did the team.

Highlight of the day was a 1-2-3 sweep of the boys 50 free (13 - 14) led by Bob Hwang, Nui Harris and Chris Weber. Both Bob and Nui broke the team record and picked up p sectional cuts, but only Bob will get to keep the record as he swam a 25.57 to Nui's 25.59.

Sunday, Relay day saw Canyons win 14 relays to claim victory. All the coaches ended up in the pool as did most of the team. With less than a year until the next summer JO, the team is predicting a repeat.
