CANYONS KICKS OFF SHORT COURSE SEASON AT RIO MESA

The water was cloudy and was reported to "taste like burned steak" but none of that mattered to the 140 Canyons swimmers who swarmed Rio Mesa High School for the Rio Mesa Invitational, this past weekend (October 7 & 8).

Although early in the season, Canyons swimmers gave Southern California a sneak peek at what we do best here in the Santa Clarita Valley...lots of fast swimming.

Of the 140 Canyons swimmers, more than 130 set personal records (a team record in itself). In addition to personal records, 8 year old Sasha Kumar added 3 more records to her collection (she holds two long course records). No longer Suman's little sister, Sasha broke Lindsay Taylor's 12 year old 8 & under 100 back record (1:28.96) with a 1:28.15 victory. She then broke Ashley Dickenson's 13 year old 50 Breast record (42.56) with a strong 42.40. Sasha finished by knocking 12 seconds off Andrea Kropp's 100 breast record set in 2002 (1:44.85) by swimming a very strong 1:32.85. 2005-2006 was a banner year for team records and if Sasha is any indication, Canyons record book will be rewritten again this year.

With so many great early season swims Canyon first salutes the 69 athletes who achieved new time standards with their swims this weekend. Each of the following saw at least one new time standard achieve this weekend (in most cases several). To see the list of achievements, take a look at a new feature for this year, THE GOLD REPORT.
