DAY FIVE REPORT

Distance swimming is a grueling business, but for Konrad Antoniuk the further he goes, the better he gets. Swimming the 1650, Konrad broke a ten year old team record by two one-hundreths of a second. Clocking a 16:06.12, Konrad who only turned 15 in December, broke Ryan Parmenter's 1997 record of 16:06.14. But that was only half of Konrad's impressive swim. At the 1000 yard mark, Konrad broke the team record for the 15 & older 1000 with his split time of 9:41.15 which bettered Ryan Parmenter's 1997 team record of 9:41.68. One race, two records. To give you an idea of how fast Konrad was moving, he did 33 50 yard splits as fast as 26.43 and no slower than 29.92. His average 50 yard split was 29.27. Both times were National Reportable times placing Konrad in the top 16 in the country.

Jordan Danny decided the last day of Sectionals would be a good day to break a record as well. Jordan blazed to a 1:04.59 in her preliminary swim of the 100 breaststroke and then a 1:04.70 in the finals. In the process she broke Sandy Scott's 1995 team record of 1:04.74 and picked up another National Championship qualifying time. Both times were National Reportable times placing Jordan in the top 16 in the country.

Jordan's breaststroke skills were then put to use as part of the 400 medley relay (with Chelsea Griffiths, KT Livingstone and Adriana Silva) as the National Championship bound quartet earned a 7th place finish.

KT Livingstone was required to compete in a swim off for the 100 fly (her second in two meets) which she won and earned herself a spot in the 100 fly bonus final. In the evening event she flew to a 57.60 to finish 3rd in her heat and take 19th overall. KT's time was National Reportable placing her in the top 16 in the country.

The boys' medly relay team finished 14th place which in itself is an impressive feat as leadoff swimmer Michael Chiu, despite being well under the weather, toughed it out to help the team of Chiu, Colvin, Nugent and Kristensen to another great swim.

Chelsea Griffiths, coming off a foot injury showed great promise as she qualified for the bonus final of the 100 back and then powered her way to third in the final (19th overall).

Canyons finished 4th place for Division II (medium sized teams) and was the top Southern Californa Swimming team for that division and the 5th Southern California Swimming club overall behind Mission Viejo, Swim Pasadena, FAST and Irvine Aquazots. Not bad company to keep.

All in all, the meet was an overwhelming sucess for Canyons as our young team of swimmers made an impact on the meet daily. With several 13 and 14 year old sectional qualified swimmers not attending the meet this season as they rest for JOs, the summer and next year's Spring Sectionals will be all about the blue and yellow.

DAY FOUR REPORT

Day four of the Sectional meet saw Adam Kerpleman continue to hone his sprint game with a 14th place finish in the consolation final of the 50 free. ADam posted a 21.38 in a field that put 15 swimmers within .43 of each other. Konrad Antoniuk turned in a lifetime best 500 free taking his best time down by 6 seconds to a 4:41.98. The big news for the Canyons squad was the qualification for Spring nationals by the boys 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of Adam Kerpelman, Ryan Kristensen, Dan Colvin and Garrett Nugent took their 3:09.86 swim to a 5th place finish. On the girls side, the quartet of KT Livingstone, Maggie Hanson, Chelsea Griffith and Adriana Silva combined for a 3:37.09 to come within 1.07 of a national championship qualifying time.

DAY THREE REPORT

Day three of the Sectional meet was the first to feature relays and the Canyons crew did not disappoint. Swimming to an 8th place finish, the foursome of Adam Kerpleman, Ryan Kristensen, Dan Colvin and Garrett Nugent turn in an impressive 7:01.57 which qualfied them for the National Championship meet to be held in New York later this month. Earlier in the day Maggie Hanson picked up a sectional cut in a time trial swimming all by herself. Danny Colvin dropped almost two seconds and earned himself a sectional time in the 200 free (swimming as a bonus event). Saturday features the 200 IM, 50 Free and 500 free events pluse more relays. Check back for details.

DAY TWO REPORT

Four Canyons swimmers made their way to evening finals at the California/Nevada Gold Section Championships. The meet, which features top swimmers from all across California and Nevada is an annual event that signifies the beginning of the end of the short course season.

Jordan Danny continued to amaze her teammates and her competition by swimming faster...again. Her morning swim of 2:17.63 earned her third seed for the evening finals where she added only one one hundredth and kept her position for a third place finish. Jordan was one of only 3 Southern Californians in the final heat. Already a national qualifier for 18 & under, Jordan came up only :00.13 from an open National Qualifying time. Not bad for an athlete who is not tapering for this event as she will be flying to New York in a few weeks to compete with the best the nation has to offer.

Jordan wasn't the only Canyons swimmer to enjoy the finals. Adam Kerpleman, a 2004 Olympic Trials qualifier and former University of Virginia swimmer, now part of the Canyons team and looking ahead to '08, turned in two nice sprints. In his prelim of the 100 free, Adam clocked a 45.57 to earn his way to finals. In the finals Adam finished 4th in a race that saw 7 or the 8 finalists within .81 of each other.

KT Livingstone started what might be the longest two weeks of the year for her. Swimming a few days at the Sectional and then again next week at the Junior Olympics, KT was explosive in her 200 fly narrowly earning a trip back to consol finals. In the evening event, KT exploded once again taking her time all the way down to an impressive 2:05.41, finishing 3rd in her heat and 19th overall. Only 14, KT was the youngest Southern Californian in the top 24 and was in the top five for SCS swimmers.

Garret Nugent rounded out Canyons swimmers earning a trip to the evening finals when he grabbed a spot in the consol with his 47.53 morning swim. Ranked 65th in the morning, he knocked more than a second off his best time and displaced 41 swimmers to earn his way back to consolation finals.

The Sectionals continue through Sunday with a sold contingent of young Canyons swimmers letting our fans know that Canyons competes on all levels from age group to national.
