SUMMER AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS

CANYONS SWIMS TO VICTORY

The fourth and and final day of the Summer Age Group championships saw Canyons Aquatics come away with the overall championship, the girls championship and the boys championship as well. Even with our top swimmers either sitting this meet out or swimming off events, Canyons managed to take enough gold, silver and bronzes to beat Orange County's Claremont Club, Mission Viejo, Irvine Aquazot and more. The championship came off four days of great swims that saw 4 swimmers break 11 team records, two swimmers earn National Team status, several National Reportable Times, numerous North American Championship cuts, sectional cut and numerous JO cuts. As a warm-up to the big championship meets of August, the meet was an outstanding success. Canyons earned 2719 points to take top honors.

Sunday's swim action began early as both Allison Morales and KT Livingstone eclipsed the 13-14 team record in the 1500 in the same heat of the same race swimming the metric mile stroke for stroke with Allison finishing a touch ahead in an 18:12.78 to KT's 18:13.84. Both girls surpassed Mia Paris's 2001 time of 18:18.10 with Morales finishing 3rd and Livingstone taking 4th. Their times are the #1 and #2 times for the girls 1500 in club history (all age groups combined). For the boys 1500 both Riley Mita (13-14) and Konrad Antoniuk (15 & older) took gold with Riley swimming a 17:06.25 and Konrad going 16:25.38. All Canyons milers did exceptionally well with big drops from Mitch Johnson and Chrysta McMahon who both picked up new JO cuts, as well as Jaryd Borja, Morgan Thibault, Kirsten Justice who posted huge time drops.

Bob Hwang went back to work on the record book as he approached Jr. National times in the 200 fly (2:09.90), the 50 free (25.28) and the 100 free (54.14 relay split). In each instance, Bob broke his own team record, got an NRT and won the gold medal.

The 200 fly saw Adria Morales (13-14) take 3rd with a 2:29.25 time and Kirsten Justice take 7th with a 2:33.82. Konrad Antoniuk took 4th in the 15 & older 200 fly.

The 50 free saw 12 year old Nina Morrison come up just short of her third Sectional time as she took silver with a smokin' fast 29.37. For the 10 & under boys, Austin Barreiro showed his speed with a 33.46 finish for 7th place followed by Cole Cogswell in 8th with a 33.50. For the 13-14 girls, KT proved that she can swim long and fast or short and faster as she took the gold with a 28.37 with Hayley Good taking 4th in a 28.60 and Sam Asencio in 6th with a 28.87. For the 15 & olders, Adriana Silva took 8th in a 28.88. 15 & older boys saw Ryan Kristensen take 2nd in a 25.16 with Dan Colvin in 3rd with a 25.20 and Nui Harris in 8th with a 26.01.

Nicole Antoniuk continued to amaze in her breasstroke as she won the 11-12 girls 100 with a 1:21.44 and a silver finish in the 50 breast with near team record swims. Nicole also took 5th in the 100 fly. Sarah Pino represented the 15 & older girls with a 4th place finish in the 100 breast with a 1:19.97. Danny Colvin represented the 15 & older boys with his 4th place breast finish.

The 11-2 girls picked up an NRT in the 400 free relay off swims by Stephanie Poleman, Bryanna Waage, Nina Morrison and Rebekah Haw while the quartet of Matt Johnson, Jordan Clark, David Van Name and Connor Mita took 6th for the boys.

13-14 boys team of Riley Mita, Kevin Martinez, Bob Hwang and Stephen Haw took the gold in the 400 free relay with Jaryd Borja, Andrew Celenyak, Jonathan Hwang and Matt Howard took 8th. The 15 & older boys team of Dan Colvin, Ryan Kristensen, Konrad Antoniuk and Nui Harris took the gold.

In the open division, Sarah Colvin, Marissa Rodgers, Nicolette Barreiro and Chrysta McMahon took 4th for the ladies and Andrew Skvarna, Davinda Rodrigo, Ethan Gilder and Michael Goldberg took 3rd.

The 13 14 girls picked up relay gold in the 400 free relay behind swims from KT Livingstone, Sam Asencio, Adria Morales and Hayley Good. The relay of Allison Morales, Kirstin Justice, Morgan Thibault and Alvina Wong took 6th.

15 & older girls Maggie Hanson, Chelsea Griffiths, Adriana Silva and Sarah Pino took the silver with Jasmine Henderson, Megan Spoon, Tessa Chiu and Rachael Stoffel taking 5th.

OH DANNY BOY

Danny Colvin added his name to the Junior National team as he showed the crowd at Buena what fast swimming is all about. Leading off the 200 freestyle relay, Danny blazed a 24.73 to become the 4th swimmer this season to join the National Team. Danny led the foursome of Andrew Skvarna, Ryan Kristensen (who posted an unofficial 24.52) and Nui Harris to victory. Danny also swam to silver in the 100 free taking his best to 54.85.

Jordan Danny was back in the water doing a little damage to the team record books as she took out Nicollete Viray's 1998 record of 5:12.97 with her 5:12.10 and a bronze medal finish. Jordan wasn't the only record setter, as Bob Hwang broke his own team record in the 100 free by more than a second as he went 54.14 as he won the 100 free. Bob then broke his 50 free team record in the lead off leg of the 13-14 200 free relay when he went 25.28 leading his teammates Riley Mita, Andrew Cselenyak and Steven Haw to a 2nd place finish.

Canyons's newest (and youngest) Sectional qualifier picked up her second sectional (and NACC meet time ) as Nina Morrison made it two for two by when she won the 11-12 100 free in a 1:02.27.

Riley Mita dropped 7 seconds in finals to take silver in the 13-14 400IM with a National Reportable Time of 4:50.68. Konrad Antoniuk, swimming the 15 & older group took 4th in the 400 IM with a 4:50.19

Nichole Antoniuk took 4th in the 11-12 400 IM with a 5:33.15. Maggie Hanson took 6th in the 15 & older 400 IM with a 5:17.90.

In the 100 Free for the 13-14 Girls, Hayley Good 3rd (1:02.17) and Sam Asencio 4th (1:02.85) with Adria Morales taking 8th. Nui Harris showed his speed with a 7th place finish in the 100 free and a 6th place finish with a 55.86. Nui then finaled with a 1:04.26 backstroke for 4th.

Adria Morales stepped up big in the 100 back as she took her time down to 1:11.78 for a 4th place finish. Chelsea Griffiths (15 & Older) took 5th in the finals of the 100 back with Maggie Hanson joining her on the podium earning an 8th place finish.

In relays, the quartet of Nui Harris, Dan Colvin, Ryan Kristensen and Andrew Skvarna finished 4th in the medley relay and won the 200 free relay (see above).

The relay team of Adria Morales, Kirsten Justice, Allison Morales and Hayley Good took the bronze in the 200 medley for 13-14 girls. Sam Asencio join the group and helped Good, and the two Morales girls to a gold in the 200 free while Justice, Morgan, Thibault, Nicolette Barreiro and Alvina Wong took 5th.

For the 15 & olders the foursome of Griffiths, Danny, Hanson, and Adriana Silva took 3rd in the 200 medley relay with Tessa Chiu, Sarah Pino, Jasmine Henderson, and Rachael Stoffel taking 4th. In the 200 free relay Hanson, Griffiths, Danny and Silva snapped up another bronze with Tessa Chiu, Jasmine Henderson, Sarah Pino and Rachael Stoffel taking 7th.

13-14 boys took bronze in the 200 medley off swims by Riley Mita, Jon Hwang, Bob Hwang and Stephen Haw. Bob, Stephen, Riley and Andrew Cselenyak returned to take silver in the 200 free relay with Jonathan Hwang, Jaryd Borja, Mitch Johnson and Kevin Martinez taking 8th.

Girls Open 200 medley relay of Dalva Phillips, Marissa Rodgers, Sarah Colvin, and Michelle Duraj took 4th in the 200 medley with the same 4 taking 4th a while later. On the boys' open side, Michael McGuire, Ethan Goldberg, Konrad Antoniuk and Davinda Rodrigo stroked to a bronze medal. The same 4 took 5th a while later in the 200 free relay.

For the 10 & unders, Mik Ranslem took 7th and Liza Kuznetsova 8th in the 200 IM while Cole Cogswell took 7th on the boys' side. Austin Hansen stroked to 8th place in the 100 free as Austin Barreiro took 5th for the for the boys with Cole Cogswell in 6th.

For the relays, Ranslem Hansen Kuztnesova and Maliah Grim took the bronze in the 200 free relay then returned to take 4th in the 200 medley relay. Austin Barrerio, Derek Chang, Jerimiah Lee and Cogswell got it it done for a bronze for the boys in the 200 medley and then again in the 200 free relay.

The 11-12 girls pulled together two silver medals behind Nina Morrison, Bryanna Waage, Stephanie Poleman and Rebehak Haw in the 200 free relay. Poleman, Nicole Antoniuk, Morrison, and Haw then did it again, taking silver in the 200 medley.

At the end of Day 3 Canyons is winning the meet by 300 points over Orange County powerhouse teams Clarmont and Mission Veijo.

BOB GOES NATIONAL

Bob Hwang had another banner day as he picked up two more gold medals and one more Junior National cut. This time the 100 fly was his victim has he went 58.05 in finals to break his own record set earlier this year. With this time earned Bob his second Jr. National cut. Later in the meet he picked up a matching gold medal with a team record setting performance in the 400 free. Bob's prelim time of 4:13.99 broke the 13-14 team record set in 1996 by Ryan Parmenter. Bob was joined on the podium by Riley Mita who took the silver with a 4:19.33 earning his third NACC time in as many races.

Nicole Antoniuk took 2nd in the 11-12 girls 200 breaststroke with a 2:55.48 earning her an SCRT.

Sarah Pino took silver in the 15 & over 200 breast with a 2:48.86 and KT Livingstone took silver in the 14-15 100 fly, followed by Adira Morales (3) and Kirsten Justice (4) and Sam Asencio (8th). Livingstone then took 2nd in the 400 free with a 4:34.43 while Allison Morales swam to 8th with a 4:40.27.

Nina Morrison, coming off her first Sectional cut on Thursday, narrowly missed the cut in her 400 free finishing in an impressive 4:42.60.

In the relays, the 13-14 combo of Adria Morales, Kirsten Justice, KT Livingstone and Sam Asencio staged a dramatic finish to take the silver in the 400 medley relay off a 1:01.76 anchor leg by Sam. The 15 & over girls consisting of Chelsea Griffiths, Sarah Pino, Maggie Hanson,and Adriana Silva took bronze. The 13-14 boys foursome of Riley Mita, Jonathan Hwang, Bob Hwang and Steven Haw took 2nd. Nui Harris, Danny Colvin, Konrad Antoniuk and Andrew Skvarna grabbed the silver in the 15 & older 400 IM medley to cap off another successful night.

In the younger division, Mik Ranslem and Liza Kuznetsova finished 5th and 6th in the 200 freestyle with Augustina Hansen adding points with her 13th place finish. Liza returned later to finish 14th in 10 & under the 100 back and 8th in the 100 breast.

Cole Cogswell finished 4th in the 10 & under 100 back dropping 2 seconds (1:22.48). Austin Barerrio once again scored this time in 11th, Derek Chang in 13th and Jerimiah Lee in 15th.

Cole Cogswell took 5th in the 10 & under 200 free with a time of 2:31.26. Austin Barreiro finished 7th with a 2:32.79

Rebekah Haw and Stephanie Poleman went 4 - 5 in the 200 back with Megan Schultz picking up points for her 15th place finish. Connor Mita picked up a LC JO time in the 100 back and earned points for the club with his 16th place finish.

Jordan Clark out of the Gold group swam a lifetime best 100 breaststroke to take 14th in the 11-12 age group while dropping over 3 seconds along the way.

The 11-12 girls 400 medley relay of 2 Stephanie Poleman, Nicole Antoniuk, Nina Morrison and Rebekah Haw earned an NRT by .09 as they placed 2nd in the event. The boys team of Connor Mita, Jordan Clark, David Van Name and Matt Johnson took 7th.

RECORDS FALL AT SUMMER CHAMPS

Day one of the Summer Age Group Championships had Canyons swimmers in fine form as three team records fell, another swimmer earned his way to the Junior Nationals, nine new Sectional cuts were earned and one more swimmer was added to the Sectional Team.

Bob Hwang led the way as he broke two team records, came within 3 one hundredths of an SCS record and earned a Junior National time as well. Bob's victory in the 200IM in a time of 2:11.93 was just .03 off the 1983 SCS record in that event. His time makes Bob one of the youngest male qualifiers for the Junior Nationals in the entire country. Bob easily broke his own team record of 2:14.00 en route to a sizable victory. Bob then broke his team record in the 200 free going under 2 minutes for the first time with a 1:59.26.

Nina Morrison made took out three standards in one swim as she won the 11-12 200 free with a 2:13.06 dropping 4 seconds off her preliminary swim and picking up an North American Championship time, her first Sectional time (a rarity for 12 year olds) and a National Reportable time. Nina later finished 8th in the 200IM with a 2:40.26. Nicole Antoniuk took 7th in that race with a 2:38.35.

Riley Mita took second in the 200 back (2:18.57 prelim) earning a North American Championship (NACC) time then reentered the water 5 minutes later to win the 800 free in a 8:56.49 breaking his team record of 9:00.03 set last week at SMOC.

Nui Harris took second in the 15 & over 200 back with a 2:18.38 and 5th place in the 200 free with a 2:02.54 picking up two NACC times (and two more sectionals) in the process. Andrew Skvarna won the consol finals with a 2:25.46 swim.

Dan Colvin earn a NACC time with his win of the consolation finals of the 200 free (2:02.25).

Allison Morales earned her first North American Championship time and a new Sectional time with a strong showing in the 800 free finishing 4th in a 9:32.74 (nine second drop) . She and sister Adria then finished 2nd (2:13.62) and 3rd (2:13.68) respectively in the 200 free with Hayley Good taking 6th 2:14.67, all three earning sectional cuts.

Adria went on to take silver in the 200 back with a 2:30.93. Maggie Hanson took 8th in the girls 15 & over 200 back with a 2:30.14 (new sectional time) and Chelsea Griffiths won the consol final with a 2:28.87. Kirsten Justice took 2nd in the 13 -14 consol finals and Hayley Good finished 6th. Maggie then took 6th in the 15 & over 200 IM with a 2:31.28 and Jasmine Henderson took 7th in consol finals with a 2:37.30
