CANYONS AQUATIC CLUB FAQ SHEET
Q: If I join Canyons, do I have to compete?
A: No. Competition for all Canyons swimmers is optional. We offer several opportunities each month for you to test your skills at local and regional swim meets, but the choice is yours
Q: What kind of fees will I have to pay?
A: All Canyons swimmers must join USA Swimming for insurance protection. Varsity swimmers will only pay monthly tuition ($90/month) and we waive the normal Family Commitment Fee. For this summer we are offering a special deal. Pay for two months and get the third month free!
Q: Where will I train?
A: The Varsity group will begin the summer at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center then move to our home pool at the College Of The Canyons. Summer practices are currently scheduled for 6:00 PM. All Canyons Aquatic practices are held in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Q: What if I can only come 2 days a week?
A: Naturally we would love to see you every day of the week, but we understand some of our swimmers have obligations to school and jobs. Whether you attend two days a week or all five, we will do our best to give you the best possible workout.
Q: I play other sports, is that a problem?
A: There is no better way to get in shape or stay in shape than swimming. Zero impact as well as increased stamina are just a few of the benefits. Canyons has cross-trained athletes in all sports including: football, baseball, basketball, track and field and more. Our swim workouts are key to cross conditioning.
Q: CanÕt I just swim with my high school this summer and fall?
A: Unfortunately the state budget cuts have led to the elimination of numerous arts and athletic programs in the Hart District. At this time it appears the year round swim programs will be eliminated and the only chance to swim with your high school will be in the 2009 swim season (January Š May).
Q: What do I do when high school swimming starts next January?
A: That decision is purely yours. You can choose to swim with both programs either attending two practices or alternate. Many of our swimmers choose to train with Canyons during the high school season to benefit from longer workouts, better training schedule and less crowded lanes. Swimmer choosing to train with exclusively with their high schools can suspend membership at no cost or penalty.
Q: Can I get a PE waiver swimming for Canyons?
A: Yes. Canyons is registered with the Hart District as a Qualified athletic program. Canyons coaches will sign a PE waiver for high school swimmers keeping an 85% attendance record.
Q: What if choose to compete?
A: Competition is the best way for our coaches to determined your skill level. Swimmers that achieve certain time standards will be offered promotion opportunities.
Q: How do I join?
A: High School swimmers do not need a swim test. You can sign up on-line on our web site at: www.canyons.org or at our home pool at the College Of The Canyons.
Q: Why Canyons?
A: Experience, history and a genuine interest in your success. We are part of this community and have a vested interest in the success of every high school program. We are a part of Santa Clarita Valley.
